There is a damage improvement from hitting behind the target as well as from the sides for every damaging spell. Attacking from diagonals should result the same as if you attacked the enemy from the side.
I forget the direct formula but I think its +10% dmg when attacking from behind, +5% dmg when attacking from the side, +0% dmg when attacking face to face. But I would not write that % in stone as I am entirely sure.
